School Supplies & Books

The following is a list of my favorite stores to find reasonably-priced but high-quality books, supplies, and craft materials. You may not have all of these stores in your area, but you may find similar stores near you.

Brick & Mortar Stores

1. US-Toy - This store is invaluable. They have a web site, but I shop there in person. They have great prices and sell teaching supplies, classroom posters, homework trackers, curriculums, all types of learning materials, books, games, art supplies, the list goes on and on. Very high-quality items (even puppets, magician's supplies, and themed party goods). Teacher’s discount card available, applies to homeschooling parents as well and gives you 10% of your entire purchase, no matter what you buy. http://www.ustoy.com/

2. Dollar tree - Don't overlook this store. They have a school supply section in which they carry flash cards, fillable reward certificates, reward stickers, alphabet wall trim (classroom style), classroom posters displaying the seasons or educational themes. In the book ssection you can find activity books and more. Some of the same books you find in Barnes and Noble for just a dollar - probably only because they are overstocks, or out of print.

3. Barnes and Noble - They have a nice section for homeschool teaching materials. Also in that section are books written by homeschooling parents and support books by professionals.

4. Office Max and Office Depot - They sell much of what I listed under Dollar Tree, plus full-year curriculum books based on grade/age.

5. Walmart (see #4's description)

Online Stores

1. Oriental Trading - Fabulous selection of teaching supplies, gym toys, outdoor playthings such as parachutes and balls, classroom furniture, personalized pencils, and more. Unbeatable prices. http://orientaltrading.com

2. Amazon.com - If you need it, they sell it. You can sign up for special membership as a Mother, College Student, or Teacher, or simply sign up for Prime membership, and for a worthwhile annual fee, you will enjoy free 2-day shipping on many thousands of items. I don't think I could live without it! Free shipping no matter the weight of the item - I even ordered mattresses that way! Love Amazon. http://www.amazon.com

3.  Scholastic - Great selection of books, of course, and great sale prices too. http://store.scholastic.store.scholastic.com

4. Half.com - If you have an Ebay account, you already have a Half.com account, they are sister stores. But Half.com mostly sells books and media. I have found this to be an incredible source for hard to find books of all types, be it fiction, history, children's, academic, or reference. Many hard-to-find, out of print, gently used books. I've purchased books there starting at $0.40. No kidding! http://www.half.com

5. BN.com - Barnes and Noble's web site has paperback and ebooks for sale, and there are a lot of ebooks available now for free all over the web. But - did you know that some very old books, which have been out of print for many years, have been scanned in for reading online? Barnes and Noble has a few, such as The Wilderness Hunter (pre 1923) by Theodore Roosevelt, and The Man in the Iron Mask (1902) by Alexandre Dumas. They also rent textbooks, sell used books, and sell eTextbooks. These can be read on your Nook device, or they can be read online using their free Nook app.
